My artistic practice
I'm Sophia Williams, an impressionistic oil painter capturing the distinctive light, atmosphere, and wildlife of the North Norfolk coast. Based in my Stiffkey studio, I create original paintings that evoke the sweeping skies, golden beaches, marsh harriers, and tranquil marshlands that make this landscape and its inhabitants so extraordinary.
Alongside my North Norfolk landscapes, I've begun exploring intimate moments through still life painting. "The Reach" my first in this series, captures the simple gesture of a hand reaching toward a wine glass - a moment of anticipation and connection painted with the same bold, expressive brushwork that defines my landscape work. My still life paintings explore how light transforms the quiet rituals of daily pleasure, bringing together my passions for art and wine appreciation in works that celebrate life's contemplative moments.

What I paint
North Norfolk Landscapes
The sweeping skies, golden beaches, and tranquil marshlands that make this coastline so extraordinary. From Holkham's endless sands to the intimate creeks around Stiffkey, these paintings capture the distinctive light and atmosphere that changes constantly throughout the day.
Wildlife of the Coast
The marsh harriers soaring over Cley, seals basking at Blakeney Point, and all the creatures that call this landscape home. These paintings focus on the character and grace of Norfolk's wildlife, painted with the same bold, expressive brushwork as my landscapes.
Still Life - Quiet Moments
Exploring intimate moments away from the coast. "The Reach" series captures simple gestures like reaching for a wine glass - moments of anticipation and connection that celebrate life's contemplative pleasures. These works bring together my passions for art and wine appreciation.
The Saltmarshes
The purple sea lavender and sea aster that bloom right outside my studio, the mudflats, and the way light plays across the water channels and creeks. Living here means I can paint these scenes through every season, capturing the subtle changes that make each day different from the last. This saltmarsh has been developing for over 6,000 years and is particularly striking in mid to late summer when the sea aster and sea lavender are in flower.

Experience the my paintings in person. Digital images can never fully capture the texture, luminosity, and distinctive brushwork of original oil paintings. These works need to be seen in proper light to appreciate how the paint catches and reflects, creating depth and atmosphere that changes throughout the day.
